In the realm of construction machinery, the excavator is hailed as the "king of construction equipment" and is widely used across various types of construction projects. However, the safety risks associated with operating an excavator cannot be overlooked. Data indicates that many accidents are directly linked to operational practices within the cab. I. Basic Cab Protocols: Details Determine Safety


1. Seatbelts—The "First Line of Defense" for Safety


The seatbelt is a crucial component of the excavator's safety system. Always fasten your seatbelt before operating the machine. Before use, carefully inspect the mounting bracket and the webbing for any abnormalities; replace them immediately if damage is found. Even if the seatbelt appears intact, it must be replaced every three years. Failure to use a seatbelt during a machine rollover can result in the operator suffering violent impacts inside the cab, being thrown out, or being crushed beneath the machine, leading to severe injury or death.


2. Proper Use of Cab Doors and Windows


The cab door serves as the safe entry and exit point for the operator. During operation, the door must be securely latched, whether open or closed. Many operators have a habit of resting their hands on the door frame while working; however, when moving downhill or driving off a trailer, an unsecured door can slam shut rapidly due to gravity, easily crushing fingers. Additionally, the rear window serves as an emergency exit; if an accident renders the main door inoperable, an emergency hammer can be used to shatter the rear window glass for a safe escape.


3. Seat Adjustment and Driving Posture


Before operation, adjust the seat to a suitable position, including the fore-aft position, backrest angle, headrest, and armrests. Modern excavator seats typically feature lumbar support and adjustable tilt and height settings; proper adjustment effectively reduces fatigue during prolonged operation. Notably, always stop machine operations before adjusting the seat.


4. Cab Environment Maintenance


Keep the cab interior tidy and free of clutter—such as tools or spare parts—to prevent the operator from slipping or falling during operation. Promptly clean off any mud, grease, or snow from the floor, control levers, and armrests. Furthermore, do not allow combustible materials like wood chips, dead leaves, or paper scraps to accumulate around the engine, as this poses a fire hazard.


II. Key Operational Protocols: Prevention is Better than Cure


1. Essential Pre-start Checks


Before starting the engine, ensure the safety lock lever is in the "locked" position and start the machine while seated in the operator's seat. Sound the horn to issue a warning before starting the engine. After starting, check the machine's operating condition—including the bucket, boom, arm, travel system, and swing mechanism—to ensure everything is functioning correctly; repair any abnormalities immediately.


2. Unauthorized personnel are strictly prohibited from entering the cab


The cab is designed for a single occupant; no one other than the operator is permitted to ride inside or stand on the machine. If operations must be paused to communicate with personnel on the ground, lower the safety lever to prevent accidental operation.


3. Verification of operating mode


Always verify the operating mode before commencing work. Most excavators currently use the same standard control pattern (commonly known as "standard" or "ISO" controls). Operate the control levers slowly to confirm that the mode shown on the display panel matches the machine's actual movements.


4. Travel and turning guidelines


Survey the route in advance and avoid hazardous sections. When navigating narrow spaces, have a signal person guide you if possible. Do not make sharp turns while traveling; if a tight turn is required, execute it in stages. When traveling uphill, keep the drive wheels at the rear and the boom positioned uphill; when traveling downhill, keep the drive wheels at the front and the boom positioned uphill. Maintain a slow speed on descents and do not change gears during the maneuver. Never travel on slopes exceeding 30°, as this poses a risk of tipping over.


5. Safety points for excavation


Do not take excessively deep bites of soil or lift the bucket too abruptly, as this can damage the machinery or cause it to tip over. Avoid dropping the bucket too quickly to prevent the machine from rocking back and forth. Do not swing or travel until the bucket has fully cleared the ground. When loading trucks, do not pass a bucket filled with soil or rock over the truck's cab; discharge the load only after the truck has come to a complete stop and the driver has exited the cab.


6. Operation under the influence is strictly prohibited


Operating an excavator after consuming alcohol significantly increases the risk of accidents and property damage; the operator bears full liability for any such incidents. Maintain full concentration during operation and avoid distractions such as making phone calls or eating.


III. Strategies for special operating conditions


1. Working on slopes


Machine stability is significantly affected when working on slopes. You can first level a flat area on the slope and position the machine there before commencing work. If the engine stops while on a slope, lower the bucket to the ground and place all control levers in the neutral position before restarting the engine.


2. Icy and Snowy Conditions


When operating on ice or snow-covered ground, reduce speed and avoid sudden starts, stops, or rotations. Be aware that road shoulders or snowdrifts may be deeper than anticipated; exercise extra caution as frozen ground softens when temperatures rise.


3. Near Underground Utilities


If water or natural gas lines might be buried near the excavation site, consult the relevant authorities to determine the exact location of the pipelines before proceeding with careful excavation.


IV. Safety Lockout When Leaving the Machine


The machine must be secured whenever you leave it. Accidental operation of the machine while the operator is away can lead to injuries caused by crushing or dragging. The correct procedure is to lower the bucket to the ground, lock the control levers, and remove the engine key.


No aspect of safety is trivial; details determine success or failure. Every excavator operator should internalize these guidelines and put them into practice, maintaining constant vigilance so that safety becomes a habit—and that habit, in turn, ensures safety. Only through truly safe operation can the excavator become a powerful tool for creating value rather than a source of tragedy.
